Death toll in New Orleans attack rises to 15, photo of attacker released

The death toll from a New Year's Eve car-ramming attack in New Orleans, Louisiana, has risen to 15, with the suspect also shot dead by police. The FBI has released a photo of the suspect.

The BBC reported this new death toll, after previously reporting 10 deaths.

Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a popular tourist destination for its nightlife, was attacked by a gunman who drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people celebrating New Year's Eve at 3:15 a.m. local time on Wednesday. The driver then jumped out and opened fire with a firearm. Police returned fire. The attacker was also killed.

According to reports by AFP and CNN, the suspected attacker has been identified as Shamsud-Deen Jabbar (42), a resident of Texas, USA. The FBI, the US central investigative agency, has identified him and released a photo.

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who once served in the U.S. military, has been arrested twice, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was arrested in Katy, Texas, in November 2002 for petty theft. He was convicted and sentenced to a small fine.

The FBI is investigating the incident. Investigators are looking for answers to questions such as whether Shamsud-Deen Jabbar has any political or religious affiliations or is he affiliated with any 'terrorist organization'.

Two law enforcement sources told CNN that multiple bombs were found in an ice container in the truck used in the attack. They were defused, along with an ISIS flag.
