Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed regret over the downing of an Azerbaijani passenger plane from Russian airspace. He has apologized for it. The Kremlin said in a statement on Saturday. It said the passenger plane was accidentally shot down while trying to repel a Ukrainian drone attack.
An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, killing at least 38 people on board. The plane was en route from the Azerbaijani capital Baku to Grozny, the capital of the Russian region of Chechnya. There were 67 passengers and crew on board.
Azerbaijan has launched an investigation into the crash. Four people familiar with the investigation told Reuters that the Russian air defense system mistakenly shot down the passenger plane.
President Vladimir Putin apologized for the tragic incident in Russian airspace. He once again expressed his condolences and sympathy to the families of those killed in the incident. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the accident," the Kremlin statement said.
The Kremlin claimed that the passenger plane was accidentally shot down while trying to repel a Ukrainian drone attack. Russia said in a statement that Ukraine was carrying out drone attacks on Grozny, Mozdok and Vladikavkaz at the time. Russian air defense systems were repelling the attacks.
